The founder of Takeout Taxi has started a new restaurant delivery service catering to large groups.
Restaurants To You delivers breakfast, lunch or dinner to corporate events and social gatherings in Boston, Cambridge and on the South Shore. The Stoughton company offers buffet-style menus from restaurants and caterers including the Halfway Cafe, the Sunset Grill in Boston, Spitfires Barbeque in Canton, Pizzeria Regina and Subway.
"If a team is feeding 50 people at a meeting, they don't want to order the way most multirestaurant delivery companies have evolved, meaning they don't want an individual-portioned lunch menu and have each person select what they want," president and CEO Kevin Abt said.
Restaurants To You offers more variety than competitors when it comes to feeding large groups, Abt said.
Menus are available on the company's Web site, and orders can be placed online or by phone up to 4 p.m. the day before delivery.
"We're in the process right now of adding 20 to 25 restaurant and catering partners, and that will bring us close to 75," Abt said. Abt, 50, founded Takeout Taxi in Virginia in 1987 and expanded it nationally. It had almost $100 million in sales when he sold it in 1997.
"My research suggests to me that there's over $1 million a week in food sales in downtown Boston and Cambridge being delivered by some entity to customers," he said.
